After just a few years started playing in youth praise teams and, not long after at age 16, he made it to the main stage at his local church. With the power of music, he saw an improvement in school, and his auditory disorder was almost completely overcome. He turned to this newfound skill as a coping mechanism and discovered a true passion for music. He joined band as a drummer and picked up guitar not long after. At the start of middle school, his parents tried a new method: music. At a young age his parents discovered that he had an auditory processing disorder which made school a struggle during his early years. Winston was born and raised in Houston, TX. He is a guitar teacher at School of Rock Spring. Now he brings his knowledge and love of music to the School of Rock family in the hopes of giving the next generation of musicians what so many have shared with and given to him. He then acquired silver certificates to be a repair technician of Fender acoustic and electric guitars and began his own repair business. He went to work for a major musical instrument chain and began repairing guitars and stringed instruments. Upon leaving that line of work he dove right back into his true love, music. In the mid 90s James put music on the back burner and settled into a job in the Petrochemical field, building valve testing equipment.

During this time he also realized his passion for modifying and upgrading his instruments, which was another skill he learned from his dad (who had been a TV repair man).
He formed his first band, which later became Painted Black, and started playing all around the local area. When he was 16 he began sitting in with his stepdad's band and honing his improv and stage presence. He received his first guitar at the age of six and started plucking away for hours each day, but he did not start any formal type of training until the age of 11 when his dad gave him some Mel Bay method books. His parents exposed him to everything from country and western, and from Motown to rock and roll. Born and raised in Houston and Montgomery, Texas, James Owen was surrounded by music all of his youth.
